NFL Intriguing Game of the Day

Minnesota Vikings @ Green Bay Packers

Bias+ Score 3.3 Favors Minnesota Vikings

The team with the smallest win margins in history has to be part of the “Intriguing Game.” After all it’s historic. The Vikings have won an NFL record 11 one-score games. Add the fact that Green Bay is looking to slip into the playoffs and that this is a Divisional contest and the drama becomes evident.

Both teams are rewriting their quarterback stories. Kirk Cousins is having the season of his dreams. Aaron Rodgers is learning what it’s like to work with inexperienced receivers but he and his receivers are trending up on the learning curve. Let’s look at the numbers. First the underdogs.

The Packers are ranked 18th with -1.4 Net Points to date. Offensively they rank 19th averaging 20.9 Points per game (PPG). They rank 17th in passing and 14th in rushing with 259.9 yards per game (YPG) and 94.5 YPG respectively. Defensively, the Packers rank 18th allowing 22.3 PPG. Even in terms of yardage the are right in the middle allowing 336.8 YPG. They break even in Average Turnover Differential at 0.

The Vikings could not be more different. Where the Packers defense and offense rank similarly, the Vikings’ ranking differential is striking. They rank 7th offensively and 28th defensively. They are scoring 25.2 PPG but they are allowing 24.9 PPG.  They rank 5th in Average Turnover Differential at +0.4.

Interestingly, although the Vikings record is far superior, the Packers are betting favorites at -3.0. Also, the talking heads in the NFL are torn with 6 of 10 favoring Green Bay.

This could be because the Packers have been surging while the Vikings are just getting by. In the last 3 weeks, the Packers rank 5th in Net Points at +9. The Vikings however rank 18th with -1.7 Net Points.

Bottom line, it seems the Packers are trending up and this is the time to do it. The Vikings have clinched a playoff spot and the Wildcard but they don’t have that championship caliber defense.

The Packers occupy the 10th spot in the playoff scenario with 7 spots available. They may need some outside help but beating the Vikings is job one.

This is going to be a classic quarterback battle. Who do you have more faith in, Kirk Cousins or Aaron Rodgers? Enjoy!
